Early morning, I went for a walk with the dogs, and the beautiful lake was super calm. Not many campers were up yet, and I just loved this peace and quiet. A beaver was having a great swim across the lake. Penny spotted it, but didn’t react to it. Just watched it. Baru was busy sniffing anything Penny was checking out as he usually does.
After we packed up, we continued our quest on the Alaska Highway. About half hour later, we noticed another great camping spot, so if you head that direction, make sure to check it out. We arrived at Toad River around 7:30AM for breakfast and did some souvenir shopping! Gotta have the Alaska Highway sticker!
From Summit Lake it was 4 hours and 20 minutes to Watson Lake, our next stop. We weren’t sure if we were going to stay there, or just get gas and watch the sign posts out there. We saw a few eagles along the way along Muncho Lake and they were quite low in the trees. The lighting was not great for photos, which was unfortunate. We saw a black bear and a few bison on our route. Once we saw the “Welcome to Yukon” sign, we made it our mission to put another Crowsnest Connect sticker on the board with all the other travellers sticker statements. Of course there was road construction going on, so had a nice nap while waiting for the pilot car to come get us. When we arrived in Watson Lake, I went to the sign park, while Jeff gassed up. We had driven 2000km by this time and we seemed to be about halfway to Tuktoyaktuk.
Two years ago, we camped out at Swift River by the water along the Alaska Highway, in the bush – surprisingly never saw a bear while there – which was a bit sketchy to get into and out. But we made it, thanks for Jeff’s excellent driving skills. There was a little restaurant just up the road from there, in Teslin, where we usually get something to eat and gas up again as you never know when you see the next possibility to do that. Once you are in the Yukon you go back out to BC for about an hour or so, as that is how the road winds through the 2 provinces.
About 197km out from reaching Whitehorse, there was a blip of cell service…”Stop the caaarrrrr…” We got our fix and moved on… Around 2:30PM we were quite hungry and were hoping to get to that cure restaurant from 2 years ago in Teslin for a bite to eat.
We finally made it into Whitehorse by 4:45PM. The cord for the break and trailer lights had accidentally disconnected from the 4Runner, and had dragged a long way on the ground, so was completely shredded, and Jeff needed a RV repair place to get what he needed. We were hoping for a camp site with showers, but there was nothing in the near vicinity, so we opted for Fox Lake provincial campsite along the way, which had a beautiful lake as the name suggests. Jeff repaired the trailer, I cooked us dinner and walked the dogs.
